The benefits of a dirt bike steering damper
If you've ever heard or seen of a dirt bike steering damper before but are not sure what they do, or maybe you thought they were just for FMX riders, then this article is for you. We cover the ins and outs of steering dampers and how they benefit motocross and riders.
What is a dirt bike steering damper?
A dirt bike steering damper, or steering stabiliser, is an adjustable and hydraulic shock-absorbing device that is mounted at the front of your motocross or enduro bike, where it’s generally positioned under your bars or triple clamp.
How does a steering damper work?
Dirt bike steering dampers are designed to stabilise the front end of your MX bike, controlling harsh and sudden movements while aiding in preventing headshake. By controlling the front-end, it makes it both safer for you as a rider, as you’ll remain in the control of the dirt bike, but the bike itself will remain settled, extending right through to the rear end of the bike. A steering damper also assists in steering, as it helps to eliminate harsh and quick movements of the front-end, which is also the case when hitting ledges, rocks and roots that you might find in the tracks and trails. Some riders have also reaped benefits in reducing arm-pump thanks to a steering damper,
Who is a steering damper for?
Steering dampers are used by many dirt bike riders, regardless if it's motocross, off-road and enduro, or even desert racing. They're more commonly found on the bikes of off-road and enduro riders and racers, as those disciplines serve up many harsh movements on the front-end of the motorcycle. They are particularly popular for desert riders who are reaching incredibly high speeds in tough conditions, and if you were to go to an event like Hattah or Finke, you'll find it tough to spot a bike without one. Steering dampers are typically less common in motocross, however they're highly beneficial for riders and racers who are looking to eliminate headshake, which can often be difficult to solve with your suspension, and generally means compromising other characteristics of your set-up.
How will a steering damper benefit my riding?
A steering damper will not improve the handling performance of your dirt bike, but it will also reduce fatigue. By managing harsh and sudden forces that would usually quickly tire you out, you'll be able to maintain greater control of your dirt bike longer, making you a stronger and safer rider in the process.
