Three storage solutions for off-road and adventure riding
When it comes choosing a storage solution for your dual-sport and adventure bike, there are plenty of options available.
In this guide, we look into three common adventure bike storage solutions, and which type of riders they suit best.
Tank/tail bags: Tank bags and tail bags are the perfect storage solution for those who only need to pack the essentials, or those that just that little more. They’re usually small in size, and depending on your bike, they’re out of the way for the most parts. Tank and tail bags can be handy for storing items like a first aid kit, tools, and even just your personal items - or for the travelling minimalist, you could fit a selection of clothing with some smart folding techniques.
Hard panniers: Hard panniers or saddle bags are great for protecting your personal items as they’re incredibly robust, however you will need the appropriate brackets and frames to support them on your bike. Hard panniers are perfect for those who tend to do more touring - the reason for this is that rigorous adventure riding can cause the hard pannier to break at fixing points from the constant vibrations, or in the event of a crash, they’ll almost certainly break off the mounts.
Soft panniers: Soft panniers, or dry packs, are the perfect option for adventure riding. They’re lightweight, robust, waterproof, and they’ll off-road riding better than anything else. You can also maximise the storage inside of them, ensuring you pack everything you need. You’ll still require the appropriate mounting equipment to fit them, however they’ll be much better suited towards off-road adventures.
