Racing motocross is expensive, but it's one of the most accessible and affordable forms of motorsport in Australia and around the world.

There are actually a number of ways to make the sport as affordable as possible, and in this guide, we cover how you can afford to race motocross without going broke.

Set a budget:
Setting a budget is one of the most important aspects of being able to afford racing motocross. Without establishing a budget, it's very easy for racing to become too hard and expensive, especially when costs start to blow out.
By setting a budget, you can make smarter decisions when it comes to buying MX gear, motocross bike parts, and even entry fees.

It's best to outline an estimate overall cost for all the racing you plan to do for the season, as well as any parts, gear, and travel costs too - this way you can get an idea of the amount of money you'll need to save, as well decide if you need to drop some races from your calendar.

Make a schedule:
Making a schedule ties in with setting a budget, as you can plan out which races you want to actually race, plus you can see what fits within your budget.

We all want to race as much as possible, and it's easy to go from week to week in search of any race day nearby, which unless your well financially equipped, is a quick way to run out of money.

We recommend prioritising the events, championships and even tracks you'd ideally like to compete in, then filling in the gaps with what remains in your budget.

Raise money through selling old gear and parts:
So we've covered why you need to set a budget and schedule, but how do actually come up with more cash?
The first thing that probably comes to mind is getting a second job, but that's hardly practical for most.

A little known hack to raising quick-money for your racing is by selling old parts and gear on classified websites and marketplaces.

We all have a shed full of old parts and gear that hasn't seen the light of day in months and years, and while they might not be worth heaps individually, collectively they could provide you with a significant boost in cash.

Selling things such as gear sets, tyres, engine components, and even plastics, can help pay for race fees and even new parts and dirt bike accessories you'll need throughout the year.

Now if you don't have any old parts and gear, this tip is still relevant - instead of selling old parts and gear, you can sell other items from around your house that don't get any use - think of old phones, electronics, bicycles and even clothing.
We all have something we don't need around the house, and it could make way for some additional funding to go racing.

Seek and secure support:
The final tip is seeking and securing support to go racing. Obtaining sponsorship will reduce your racing costs either in the form of a discount, free product, and potentially even financial support.

A lot of motocross racers think that they don't have the results to get sponsorship, but it's definitely not the case.
If you can present yourself professionally, approach companies in the right manner and ultimately provide a brand with value (no, a logo on your bike doesn't count!), then you'll give yourself the best chance getting sponsored, regardless of your results or the class you ride.

Sponsorship isn't easy to come by and it takes a lot of work and persistence, but your efforts can be rewarded in partnerships that extend for years, saving you hundreds and even thousands of dollars to go motocross racing.
