Pump fuel or race fuel?
What should I use?
The fuel you put in your motocross or enduro bike is incredibly important! Bad fuel can cause bike issues and may even ruin your weekend of riding or in some cases cause damage to your fuel system or even your engine!
In this guide, we look at the different types of dirt bike fuel available, the advantages and which one you should use in your off-road bike.
Pump fuel:
Pump fuel is the same petrol you put in your car and is available at your local service station. Typically it comes in three different octanes - 91, 95 and 98. This is the fuel that most riders will use in their bike aside from those who are racing locally or professionally and want that slight edge over their competition. We always advise putting the best available fuel in your bike, which is premium 98 octane fuel. Available at almost every petrol station, 98 is the most expensive out of the 3 however, your bike will run better, reduce the amount of carbon build up in the cylinder and perform the way it should all while producing the most power! Pump fuel is readily available and much more affordable compared to race fuel, even when buying 98, so for those that ride for fun or even race, 98 is more than enough to keep you are your bike happy.
Race fuel:
Race fuel is specifically formulated for high-performance machines and is typically used by riders chasing that edge at a local or professional level. Race fuel can be special ordered through us which generally includes brands such as VP and ETS (which are homologated for competition use in Australia), although this stuff doesn't come cheap. The performance advantage is definitely noticeable, and you'll need to map your ECU to get the most out of it, which is why professional riders are really the main consumers of race fuel.
Alternatives:
Now if you aren't wanting to spend the extra coin on race fuel there are other alternatives for those seeking extra HP. There are a variety of fuel additives designed to increase the octane of your regular pump fuel and in some cases increase the octane levels to 105! So if you want a cheaper alternative to race fuel and chasing some extra ponies, check out the fuel additives we have in stock here.
