Why the Kawasaki KX250?

Having a major soft spot for Kawasaki and completing his apprenticeship at a Kawasaki Dealership Dyl purchased the KX along with a 2002 KX250 back in 2021 for $7,000. After selling the 2002 for the same price, he was left with this 2007 that owed him nothing and he wanted to build his dream bike. This KX had clearly seen better days and was in desperate need of a complete teardown. The red, green and grey colour scheme needed to go, and as with most bike builds the list of parts and issues became much bigger than first anticipated.

Parts used and why?

Wheels:

The wheels that were on the bike originally didn't even fit properly and were from a different bike so Dyl decided on new silver Excel rims with bronze Talon hubs (thanks to John Titman Racing for getting these built for us)! Wrapped in Dunlop MX33 tyres utilising Galfer braking discs and a Renthal silver rear sprocket to give this bike the clean factory look!

Engine:

The engine was vapor blasted by Pioneer Finishes and then rebuilt from top to bottom using a Wiseco piston and clutch kit, a Pro-X con rod, Hot Rods Main Bearings, and a Winderosa complete gasket kit. On assembly, we used a Bolt engine fastener kit and Boyesen clutch and ignition covers to make it really pop and have that clean factory look. We think it looks absolutely epic!

Maintenance:

Seeing as Dyl was going all out with this build each bearing, hose, roller, slider, and guide was replaced. The brakes were completely rebuilt to bring back the stopping power of this nearly 20 year old bike! Along with a new chain, brake pads, and front braided brake line to improve overall brake feel! The suspension was also completely rebuilt and recoated by Charlie at Costanzo Racing Tuned to make sure this bike handles the way it should!

Performance:

Dyl went with a Bill's Pipes exhaust and chose the "works" edition expansion chamber to achieve the factory race look. Paired with a set of Moto Tassinari Vforce3 reeds and Funnel Web air filter this KX is going to be singing around the track. The carby was also rebuilt and a new NGK Iridium spark plug was installed to ensure the KX is running perfectly!

Controls:

ODI have just released their new CFT Handlebars (Control-Flex-Tech) that incorporate an adjustable crossbar so this was a must along with some ODI lock on grips to keep the cockpit looking clean. On top of that Dyl through on some ARC clutch and brake levers with new cables to make it all feel new again. With an MCS forged alloy gear lever and Ballard's Off Road Titanium footpegs, this bike looks as factory as you can get!

Aesthetics:

Dyl wanted this KX to stand out from the crowd, so he went with a black Acerbis plastics kit for the rear of the bike and a 2014 Acerbis green front fender and number plate. NineTwo Decals have just released their new hologram graphics so this was a must to add to the build along with a black and green Strike Seats seat cover. To give everything a nice clean finish Dyl through on some black Works Connection bling to keep it clean and factory looking.

Total Costs:

Now like any dream build most people usually dump a lot of money into restoring their bike and sometimes poor more money than what was worth when it was brand new. But you can't put a price on a one off custom bike that looks as good as this. Below is a breakdown on the costs;

  • Parts = $8670.00
  • Vapor Blasting and cerakote by Pioneer Finishes = $1500.00
  • Exhaust clear cerakote by Coastal MX = $100.00
  • Suspension by Charlie at Costanzo Racing = $3000.00
  • Engine Build by Nige= $1000.00
  • Genuine & Misc Parts = $1000.00
  • Total = $15670.00

Check it out!

What a success!

There you have it, Dyl's dream KX250 is now finished and the only thing left to do is ride the bike. Stay tuned for an epic ride video coming soon and keep your eyes peeled when you head to the track as this bike might be coming to a track near you!
